Update on my work so far...

Hey all, Im just got back from holiday and the next 2 weeks for me are going to be very busy.  Planning for the rest of my photos are still underway and hopefully I will be doing it sometime this week so then I can spend all of next week editing my photos and making sure that they are good!

My panel one photos have been printed out on been up on my board, spent all day yesterday doing that. And, they look so great!

Research - John Stezaker

John Stezaker attended the Slade School of Artin London graduating with a Higher Diploma in Fine Art in 1973. In the early 1970s, he was among the first wave of British conceptual artists to react against what was then the predominance of Pop art. His work is surreal in tone and is often made using collage and the appropriation of pre-existing images such as postcards, film stills, and publicity photographs.

The technique he uses very much interest's me and I like the how each photo is unique. This could work in some photos in panel two and many even in panel three, This artist model also relates back to my other one Duane Michels, so this can continue onto that. 

Updating you on my work

I have almost about a month or so to complete my whole folio! Overall, the process of my work is going good but I am having a very hard time trying to use the artist models I have researched and put them into my work somehow. 

At the moment the artist models I am/have been using is:

• Eadweard Muybridge
• Keith Carter
• Duane Michals
• David Hilliard
• Arthur Tress

The other artist models that I have research just haven't worked into my work, which I kinda had a funny feeling about. Panel one I love so much! I love how the high contrast has made these photos so 'out there' and interesting. Panel two I like but the two middle photos of the hand and arms are really annoying me so I will be needing to take some more photos and probably plan out some ideas of what I can put in there. Panel three is coming along quite nicely. I love the black and white effect as it makes it look like an old photo, which is the whole idea of that panel. I need to find some more artist models to use as the ones that I was originally going to use just have not work. So back to planning for that one. 

Overall, I reckon I should be done my whole panel by the due date if I keep going the way I am :)

Still planning for panel three seeing that I have not been able to take any photos lately because of the weather! I am waiting for a nice sunny day to be able to take photos and lately it has been horrible and cold so yea..

Looking through my artist models I don't even think I am going to be using the last ones I just put up. Im changing my mind all the time! I was looking around Duane Michals (one of my other artist models) and I found a guy called Arthur Tress. One of his pictures really stood out to me and I know the perfect place where to take this photo. I going to use this idea plus Duane by changing it around.

Ideas for panel three:

1) Using the garage as a setting. Thought that this could be kinda interesting looking back at my artist models seeing that there surroundings look dirty

2) Backyard. This can relate back to panel one with trees and flowers everywhere

3) Tables - Sally Mann uses this idea but I'm going to be using Michals as well.

4) Drive way - Take some laying down shots. Arthur uses this too

Research - Sally Mann

Sally Mann is an American photographer, best known for her large black-and-white photographs—at first of her young children, then later of landscapes suggesting decay and death, now that isn't really want my work is about but taking pictures of young kids is seeing that I am the model. So, These photos really relate to what scene I want to be modeling around. 

In this photo I really like how she used the lighting to create shadows. I was interested in the picture that is on the chair, this gives me the idea of doing this with my mums modeling photos.

In this photo I really like how it was taken outside. In panel three I really want to relate it back to panel one as my mum modeling outside, so going out in the back yard doing this would be a good idea to get some scenery in there too.

I really like how the lighting was used in the photo to create shadows. This gives me a idea of using clothes as seen in the photo. Gives me the chance to use props. 

Research - Laura Pannack

I finally have found some artist models! (which are woman YAY! sick of guy artist models)

Laura Pannack is a British social documentary and portrait photographer, based in London. Since 2008, she has received awards for her work and had solo exhibits. Her works are often of children and teenagers which is pretty much the whole idea of panel three seeing that I am the model representing childhood and that I am a teenager.

Little note: I honestly have NO IDEA how I am going to take these photos, seeing I am the one who is meant to be taking the photos. Guessing I might have to use a tripod or stack up chairs which I did in my last photo-shot which was a lot of hard work, but got there in the end.

These three photos where the ones that stood out the most for me and is kinda what I want to be doing. Seeing I am going to have to act all MODEL like its going to be a little tricky but worth it.

I am going to try and put in some photos from when my mum was modeling.

I really want to use black and white in these photos!!! I don't know whether I can use it or not!

I really like how she used the lighting in this photo as it is straight on the model.

Now, this photo I really like as it show the rule of thirds. I like how the model is in the centre of the picture and that you are able to see the surrounding. I also like how the lighting is straight on the model which I will be doing.

Analyzing time...

Here is what my work looks like so far, I made a few changes by getting rid of some black frames and putting them in panel two to make a connection between the two sets. Planning is still underway for panel three and hopefully I will be taking photos either tonight or later on in the week. Have found some artist models to reflect my work, its been very hard trying to find what will work in my photography but got there in the end. I am trying to stick with the blue filter throughout my work. 

Analyzing series in my work... 

These series of work I based them on one of my artist models  Eadweard Muybridge. The techniques I used from him is using the black frames and the grids. (Funny enough I didn't even plan on using a blue filter, its just how it turned out.. I like it and I am now using in throughout my whole work).

In this series of work I based it on Keith Carter. Using his blurring technique of making it look like the work is fading back to the past which really is what my work is about. He also uses quite a low contrast in his work and that was what I tried to do in my work.

Although this is only a small series of work I tried to combine both Muybridge and Carter together using the black frames and the blurring technique.

 In this series of work for panel two I used both Muybridge by using the black frames so it makes a connection between both panel one and two. I also used Duane Michals by using the same photo on top of each other but my changing it around as you can see in middle second row. I also used him on the other photos by using a sheet behind us which he does in some of his photos. The top row also reflected to him when we are making different facial expressions in each the photo's. I also started in introduce David Hilliard by using white frames.

In this series of work I used David Hilliard using white lines to sepreate parts of the image. I also used Duane Michals too by using the same technique as I did in the last series, and by using a sheet in the background.

In this small series of work I used Hilliard, Muybridge and Michals. In the middle photo I put either me or my mum on top of the opposite one (if that makes any sense). I really like how that photo turned out. I also used Hilliard too by using white lines. I used the black frames from Muybridge to by using the black frames.

Planning for panel three

So planning is under way for panel three

I have a few ideas with what I want to do with panel three but its been hard trying to look for artist models. Seeing this panel is all about me (not trying to sound vain) I was thinking of using the idea of modeling as my mum would do in her younger years. Props are going to have a pretty big impact in panel three and what I am wanting to use is windows and mirrors as a reflection of my mum and maybe even use clocks as time passing so I am going to have to do some shopping for that.

I am also wanting to use black and white in these photos but I don't know if its going to work seeing that my work so far is blue tinted and it might look abit out of place so I need advice on that part.

Planning on doing a photo shot sometime this weekend or during next week when I am on exam leave.

Panel one and two I love so much and I feel that panel three need to be even better so I want to go all out for it!

A litte note: I feel that panel one and two just dont look right together.. Maybe its just me, but I feel that panel one is to out there if you know what I mean. So im going to do some colour correcting and get rid of some of the black frames around the photos.

What my board look like so far...

WOW, its been ages since I have blogged. Been really busy editing these photos and now I have finish panel two! :D I am really proud with these photos to and I am glad to say that I am now planning panel three!

Panel one I am done editing with but panel two still might need some work. The very first photo of my mum I will have to take again because of the lighting is different from all the rest and the photos of my mums and my arm as it is to dark. but other then that I am really proud of this!

Planning for half of panel 2

Here is my plan for the last half of panel two. Im using the artist models Duane Michals and David Hilliard but using a-bit of Eadweard Muybridge. 

Michals uses shuttle speed which I am wanting to introduce in my work. Hilliard use with the white lines and Muybirdge's use with the grids.

The first picture I want to show the use of arms, the meaning behind this is reaching out to each other. The other photos have the same idea.

Research - Duane Michals

Duane Michals is an American photographer. Michals's work makes innovative use of photo-sequences, often incorporating text to examine emotion and philosophy. His use in shutter speed and grids really got my attention and I may use these techniques in panel two.  

This is want I want to do in the last half of panel two. I like the idea of using flowers in my photos, add on another flower in each shot.

I am going to use this technique in the first half of panel 2, having a long shot then have a faded close up on top.

Holidays at the moment and doing work at school! haha

Anyway, I took some really good photos a few weeks ago and they turned out soooo good! I was really proud of them and I am without a doubt using some of these photos. But, the bad thing is is that they DO NOT relate in anyway to the artist models I am using for panel two. I knew in some way this would happen so now I need to look up more artist models that relate to my work so far.

Panel two layout plan!!!

The other day I came up with some idea's on what I want to do in panel two and how its going to be layed out and this is what I came up with...

I have deiced to introduce myself into my work as a reflection of my mum's younger years. I also thought it would be alittle easier to do as well seeing that my mum is a pretty busy person, so that means taking photo's shouldn't be a problem. Taking the photos of myself will be a bit of a mission so a tripod will be needed to be able to take them. 

The first row will be moving from my mums face to mind. The middle photo will be spilt, half my mum and half me. This will be close up shots and showing different emotions. 

The second row is going to be interesting, at home I has this red vintage-looking certain which I thought would look amazing in my work. The frist two photos will be of my mum and the last two me and a long shot will be used. The rest of the photos concise of mid and long shots in my long hallway I have at home. The photos at the bottom will be a panning shot. Seeing my mums room is right beside mine im going to pan from hers to mine, which should be interesting. Seeing panel three is going to be in black and white, panel two is going to slowly go from a bright contrast to black and white.

Need to get done: Last two photos need to be taken on the next cloudy day to get the colour right.

So, planning panel two is underway and I will be taking photos throughout the week. My artist models for panel two are Alec Soth and Tina Barney, I choose these two artist models because I like how OUT THERE they are.. there photos are simple but they use very interesting techniques such as high contrast, uses a focal point and they give a sense of happiness.

I'm going to start off by using Alec Soth. The setting I am going to be using is my house using the bedrooms and the long hallway we have. The first half will be severe photos using a repetition of photos, and having my model pose in what she did in panel one. There going to be slowly going from colour to black and white which should show a sense of going back to the past.

Tina Barney's photos interest me alot with the high contrast and all this different colours in her photos. My idea for to use her is to get loads of old photos, put then on a wall and pretty much take photos of them with my model standing beside them. This is what Barney did in one of her photo.

Things I am getting rid of is the frames and the blurring out. This was used for panel one only.
Props I will be using are old photos from my mums modeling stage and maybe use flowers to give more colour in the photos. Also, was thinking of using clocks... this is an idea i was thinking. It would mean looking back into the past.

Another idea: The last half of panel two will be interesting. I was thinking of using me in there seeing I am a younger version of my mum. I don't know how this is going to work but ill try somehow.

New Idea after playing around with editing

So, today I thought of a new idea. Panel 3 is going to be in black and white and I didn't know how I was going to go from colour to black and white. So, this is what I come up with:

Seeing I am going from present to past I feel as if this is a good idea what I could do in panel 2. Going to be alot of editing involved but I'm sure that it will be worth it.

Do you have a 3 - 4 sentence statement of what your work is about?

My work is about 'Change over time' and using my mother as an example of it. Since she used to be a model in her early years I thought of going from what she is like now, A mum who loves the outdoors that's shows a lot in panel one. Then transition to looking back at past photos and then on to her reinventing herself as young woman modeling again.

Edited photos that I will not be using in my work: 

 This is a experimental photo that I did, at one stage I thought that this may be a good idea at least but no. I was thinking about going from a blue filter though to a orange filter but just didn't look right. I like this idea though of being behind the tree.

This photo was taken when I had the whole FAMILY VIOLENCE kind of thing going on, sad that I had to scrape the idea but I do like this photo and might use this idea later on in panel two where I am thinking of taking photos in the bedroom around loads of photos from when my mum modeled. Black and white photos I am IN LOVE with, and I didn't that last year in my work and didn't really want to continue it but it just looks to interesting.

A idea that I could use in panel 3

Yes, I know I shouldn't be planning panel 3 yet but I came up with a really good idea...

When I was looking though Alec Soth photos (one of my artist models for panel 2) I found these really interesting photos of woman holding signs I thought this idea would work wonders for panel 3. A long shot are used in these photos which gets a sense of where the model is. A snowy place with signs describing it. This also relates to one of the artist models I got rid of last term Barbara Kruger and the reason why I got rid of her was because captions didn't really work in the work at the time. So, in a way I could use her alongside Alec Soth!

Research - Alec Soth

Alec Soth is an American photographer, notable for "large-scale American projects" featuring the Midwestern United States.  His photography has a cinematic feel with elements of folklore that hint at a story behind the image.  

I find these photos out of most of his quite interesting because they all have a story behind them, Lighting doesn't play much of a part in these photos but the rule of thirds does. 

I was thinking of using these techniques in my work and I think it could work well. I could have my model sitting on the couch holding a picture of herself when she was modeling in her early ages as shown in the first picture.
